HISTORY OF ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is used to treat both pain
and dysfunction in the body.
Acupuncturists use needles which are
placed in skin at various locations to
relieve pain or affect a body part.
Originating in China, acupuncture is
between 5000-7000 years old and was used
throughout Western Europe and finally
introduced to the United States in the
1970’s.
Typically, acupuncturists use needles to
treat patients’ conditions; however,
there are practitioners who utilized
meridian therapy which is the concept of
acupuncture without the use of needles.
Similar to traditional acupuncture
principle, those who practice meridian
therapy employ different methods to
stimulate acupoints such as massage,
acupressure, lasers and electronic
stimulation.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS
There are twelve meridians or pathways
of energy in the body. Energy (qi) flows
along pathways in the human body which
are related to the organs, the muscular
system, and the nervous system. When the
balance of the energy is disturbed due
to trauma, poor diet, medications,
stress hereditary conditions,
environmental factors, or excessive
emotional issues, then pain or illness
results. Acupuncture helps these
imbalances, which stimulates the body’s
natural ability to heal itself.
Acupuncture is proven to remedy acute or
chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance
recuperative powers, and strengthen the
immune system.
ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT
Acupuncturists use extremely fine,
hair-thin, flexible, disposable
needles which are placed at specific
acupuncture points on the body. When
the needles are inserted you may
experience a sensation of tingling or
warmth. People are surprised to find
that treatments are quite relaxing. Most
patients do not even feel the needles at
all!
The length and frequency of a treatment
may vary for each individual and will be
determined by your acupuncturist. Some
patients will notice an immediate
improvement after the first session;
whereas, others may not notice a
significant change until after 6th or
7th treatment. Patients can experience a
worsening in the symptoms of their
condition as the body’s energy returns
to normal. This is usual and no need for
alarm. Generally, it is then followed by
improvement. Discuss your treatment plan
with your acupuncturist, since each
individual is different.
SMOKING CESSATION
Many people turn to acupuncture to quit
smoking because it uses no drugs or
medications. Most of the people who
consider having acupuncture done are
usually people who have tried and failed
multiple items with other well-known
methods. After the first, within the
first 24 hours most patients experience
a 50% reduction in their craving to
smoke.
Acupuncture treats a wide variety of
